Fall Iron Pour Poster: You can purchase scratch blocks during the event to make your own piece of cast iron artwork. Your blocks will be poured at the event in front of your eyes and ready for you to take home that day. This event is free and open to the public!Free fiery fun-

You have been invited to view Southern Illinois University Carbondale's upcoming iron pour! What is an iron pour, you may ask? Well, since the 5th century BC, pouring hot iron into casting molds has been a trademark of art and industry. From fabulous architectural feats to one-of-a-kind objects meant for gallery display, iron's range of uses is seemingly limitless.

While iron may be something that we see in our everyday lives, few of us get to view the casting process and what goes on behind the scenes. This free spectacle aims to increase the public's knowledge and understanding of what goes into making cast iron artwork--and what a spectacle it is! Attendees can expect to see a running furnace, fire and molten metal included. Hot iron will be poured into ladles, which SIU students then use to transfer the molten metal into molds.

Onlookers will have a chance to create their own cast iron art piece on site via "scratch blocks". The sculpture, ceramics and print students will be collaborating on various activities--including live t-shirt printing and ceramics sales--throughout the day. A small art gallery will be set up for viewing at the foundry complex as well.

The event will take place on November 4th, 2023, beginning at noontime. The foundry complex is located at 1520-1560 West Pleasant Hill Road, Carbondale, 62901. Again, this event will be free and open to the public. Though, seating will be first come first serve, so it is suggested that guests bring their own seating.
