Transportation to Carbondale
Flying into Marion
The Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois in Marion, IL (MWA) is a small commuter airport only 20 minutes' drive from campus. It is served by several shuttle / taxi services. Contour Airlines flies into the local Veteran's Airport in nearby Marion, IL from Chicago O'Hare Airport (ORD). Contour tickets typically must be purchased separately, unless you are booking through American Airlines. We recommend booking far in advance.
Flying into St. Louis
The closest major airport is St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Please be aware that this airport is over 2 hours away from Carbondale by car. From there you can rent a car, take an Amtrak bus from Gateway Station, or reserve the STL Shuttle Service.
From Chicago
If you are departing from or flying through Chicago, you can take the Amtrak train into Carbondale or a Contour Airlines flight to Marion (MWA). (See Flying into Marion above.)
Other Airports
The international airports in Memphis and Nashville are both about 3.5 hours from Carbondale by car. In neither case are their good public transit options to Carbondale, however.
Driving to Carbondale

Southern Illinois, often referred to as "Little Egypt," is bordered by the Mississippi River to the west and the Ohio River to the east and south. The region is characterized by its rolling hills, forests, and numerous state parks.
Southern Illinois is known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. Popular attractions include the Shawnee National Forest, Garden of the Gods, and Giant City State. There are also several historical sites, wineries, and cultural events.
